Josh Buckland is an antitrust and foreign investment lawyer with more than ten years’ experience in obtaining clearances on complex global transactions. He is also known for calmly steering clients through large-scale antitrust investigations and counselling on a broad range of competition issues.

Josh leads on cross-border matters in Europe and around the world – with particular experience in navigating the UK’s regulatory landscape. He regularly engages with the CMA on merger reviews (Phase 1 and 2), cartels and other investigations, and has a stellar track-record with FDI filings under the UK’s National Security and Investment Act.

Josh has deep knowledge across a range of client sectors, including TMT, financial services, defense, healthcare, industrials and retail. He also possesses an insider’s perspective on the UK’s TMT regulatory environment, having completed a nine-month secondment to Ofcom’s Competition Group in May 2020.

Before joining Simpson Thacher in 2021, Josh was a managing associate with Linklaters’ antitrust and foreign investment team in London. His experience prior to joining Simpson Thacher includes:

  • Leading the defence of a large-scale cartel investigation for a FTSE-100 business
  • Advising on the sale of a U.K. bank
  • Acting for Sainsbury’s on its attempted merger with Asda
Josh has an M.A. in EU Competition Law from King’s College London (2017), an LL.M. in Competition Law from the University of Melbourne (2014) and an LL.B. (Hons.) from the University of Melbourne (2009). 

Josh is admitted to practice in England & Wales and Australia.
