James Board is a Partner in Simpson Thacher’s London Funds Practice. He advises primarily on the establishment and operation of credit funds, including special situations, distressed, direct lending, liquid, structured and real estate credit funds. James also has substantial experience guiding sponsors in establishing single investor funds and managed accounts involving institutional investors. In addition, he advises on the structure and terms of incentive arrangements, including co-investment, executive carried interest and similar agreements. James also represents institutional investors on their primary fund investment and secondary purchase programmes. Prior to joining Simpson Thacher, James has represented, amongst others, Apollo, Ares, Bain Capital Credit, Bridgepoint Credit, CIFC Asset Management, CPPIB, CVC Credit, GIC, J.P.Morgan Asset Management, KKR Credit Advisors, MV Credit, Nordic Capital, Pollen Street Capital, Proventus and Triton
Named a “Rising Star” by Private Debt Investor and Euromoney LMG, James is also a recognized thought leader in the funds space, having co-authored a number of articles for publications such as Private Equity International and IFLR. In addition, James has been recognized as a key player by The Legal 500 for his work on private funds.
James has deep commercial industry insight, having previously worked in CVC Credit Partners’ legal team for six months, where he advised on the establishment and operation of CVC’s credit funds and separately managed accounts.
James earned his LPC and GDL from BPP Law School in London in 2006 and 2005, respectively. He also received a B.A. from Durham University in 2004. James is admitted to practice in England and Wales.
