The Firm represented pro bono client Associação Onçafari in the set up of Onçafari International, a 501(c)(3) public charity that is dedicated to supporting projects aiming to preserve biodiversity in Brazil through the protection of natural areas and by supporting the socioeconomic development of local communities.
Onçafari is a NGO that promotes environmental conservation, with an emphasis on jaguars and maned wolves, in various Brazilian biomes, and contributes to the socio-economic development of areas where it operates through ecotourism and scientific research. Currently, Onçafari manages or exerts influence over almost 1 million hectares of land. Onçafari’s activities also include the rehabilitation and reintroduction of jaguars into the wild, and the collection of data to better understand the relationship of monitored species with their environment. Onçafari also collaborates on a transnational project to establish wildlife corridors across South America.
The Simpson Thacher team included S. Todd Crider, Grenfel Calheiros, John Bennett, Luiz Noronha and Marcelo Lorenzen.
