Simpson Thacher Represents Amici Immigrant and Refugee Rights Organizations in Hawaii v. Trump

03.21.17
Simpson Thacher attorneys provided pro bono representation to Human Rights First, KIND (Kids in Need of Defense), Tahirih Justice Center and HIAS, filing an amicus brief in Hawaii v. Trump, No. 1:17-cv-00050 (D. Haw. 2017). The amicus brief supported the State of Hawaii’s motion for a nationwide temporary restraining order to prevent enforcement of President Trump’s revised Executive Order banning immigration from several Muslim-majority countries. The amicus brief argued that courts serve a critical role in reviewing executive actions, even when national security issues are purportedly at stake, and the Executive Order would cause irreparable harm. Hours before the Executive Order was to become effective, Judge Derrick Watson of the District of Hawaii granted the nationwide temporary restraining order. The Simpson Thacher team included Partners Alan Turner and Harrison (Buzz) Frahn; and Associates Jonathan Mincer, Reena Mittelman, Adrienne Baxley, Christopher Shields and Alison Sher.
