Simpson Thacher recently represented the underwriters, led by Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley Securities Co., Ltd., as United States counsel in the initial public offering by Acucela Inc. of 9,200,000 shares of common stock. Acucela’s common stock is registered in the United States and Japan but listed solely on the Mothers market of the Tokyo Stock Exchange. The listing by Acucela on February 13, 2014 marked the first listing by a foreign issuer in Japan since 2007.
Acucela, based in Seattle, Washington, is a clinical-stage biotechnology company that specializes in discovering and developing novel therapeutics to treat and slow the progression of sight-threatening ophthalmic diseases impacting millions of individuals worldwide. As a result of the offering, Acucela raised over $140 million to fund its operations.
