Corporate Partner Alan Klein authored an article, “The Light of Distant Stars,” in The M&A Journal’s July 2015 edition, which discusses first quarter results in the M&A market. While worldwide M&A reached $854 billion in that quarter, it was largely driven by 27 mega deals, each with a value over $5 billion. The actual number of deals during the first quarter fell 21% from the fourth quarter of 2014, caused by a greater degree of economic uncertainty. Alan noted that the rise in large scale deals may have led to some skewed data for this quarter due to long lead times. He commented, “Many reflect the culmination of a long gestation period and pent-up demand from a period of five or so years when doing any kind of big deal just wasn’t going to happen.” The article also discusses the rise in activist shareholder funds and its impact on the M&A landscape.
