On March 18, 2009, the Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China blocked Coca-Cola's proposed acquisition of China Huiyuan Juice Group Limited, a major domestic juice manufacturer, under China's recently enacted Anti-Monopoly Law ("AML"). The ruling is the first significant decision applying the AML to a foreign acquisition of a Chinese company and shows that China's antitrust regulators may be willing to chart their own course by blocking a transaction that likely would have cleared in the United States or Europe.
