Simpson Thacher matters have been shortlisted in multiple categories for Global Competition Review’s GCR Awards 2025. The Firm’s work representing Mattress Firm in its acquisition by Tempur Sealy International, including in litigation against the Federal Trade Commission, was shortlisted for “Merger Control Matter of the Year (Americas).” On January 31, U.S. District Judge Charles Eskridge of the Southern District of Texas denied the FTC’s motion for a preliminary injunction to block the merger. Cisco’s acquisition of Splunk, on which Simpson Thacher advised Cisco with respect to Foreign Direct Investment matters, was also shortlisted for “Merger Control Matter of the Year (Americas).”
Additionally, Abram Ellis, Co-Head of the Firm’s International Trade Regulation Practice, was named a finalist for “Litigator of the Year,” recognizing competition litigators whose technical skill, superior judgment and excellence in serving clients in court demonstrates that they are among the very best in their field. Abram represented JPMorgan in obtaining the Ninth Circuit’s affirmance of dismissal in an ICE LIBOR lawsuit against several major banks, which was also shortlisted for “Litigation Matter of the Year (Cartel Defense).” Abram’s other noteworthy matters in 2024 included representing Marinette Marine and HCA Healthcare in ongoing antitrust litigation matters.
Held annually, the GCR Awards honor the most significant antitrust and competition cases from the past year. Winners will be selected by GCR readers, competition advisors and lawyers, in a vote concluding on February 10.
