Simpson Thacher was honored at Brooklyn Defender Services’ virtual “Family Defense Benefit” on June 10th. The Firm was recognized for its successful representation of a mother in the Kings County Family Court in connection with her motion to vacate prior neglect findings against her, which were made based on events that occurred when she was a young mother and herself in foster care. The court vacated the findings on the grounds that the Firm’s client had fully complied with services and treatment included in the dispositional orders that the court had entered in her case. The Family Court had previously returned her children to her care—where they are thriving—and found that clearing the mother’s record was appropriate given she had ameliorated the circumstances that led to the past findings against her, and is providing a stable and nurturing home for her children.
The Simpson Thacher team included Susannah S. Geltman, Susan Cordaro and Eric Yang.
The Family Defense Practice (FDP) at Brooklyn Defender Services is the primary provider of legal representation to parents in child welfare cases in Brooklyn Family Court. The mission of FDP is to protect the right to family integrity of low- income families, primarily families of color who are disproportionately affected by the child welfare system.
