A recent Latin Lawyer feature titled “Paradigm Shifts” recognized Partner Todd Crider, who contributed reflections on the emergence and impact of pro bono work in Latin America. In his piece, Todd reflects on the progress made in Latin America by the Pro Bono Declaration for the Americas (PBDA), which commits signatories to undertake a minimum of 20 hours pro bono per lawyer each year. Todd explains “The PBDA has been a component in furthering the growth of a pro bono ecosystem across the region. It has helped take pro bono legal work from a fringe activity by a few to a widely accepted option for lawyers at leading firms across the region.” Todd also discusses other strategies, such as legal education, to continue to further the pro bono movement in Latin America.
From 2005 to 2008, Todd spearheaded the formation of and served as a U.S. representative to the multi-national committee that drafted the PBDA, which was an initiative of the Cyrus R. Vance Center for International Justice. Todd currently serves as an executive committee member and previously served as the founding chair.
