Corporate Partner Pete Gilman was quoted in a Law360 article on the process of private equity firms’ succession planning. The article, titled “How To Guide Your PE Clients Through Succession Planning,” examines leadership transitions within private equity firms in the form of succession planning once the founder of the firm nears retirement.
In the article, Pete comments on the complexity of succession planning and the need for leadership transitions to be tailored to the internal dynamics of each PE firm. “It’s a discussion that takes a very long time to unfold,” Pete states, adding “It really depends on the dynamics of the firm.” Pete also discusses the importance of articulating a clear message to LPs and getting the timing right when announcing a succession plan to the market. He said that “usually, the opportune time to [announce a succession plan] is when you’re not fundraising and are not on the eve of fundraising.”
