Simpson Thacher was profiled by Law360 as a Mergers & Acquisitions Group of the Year for 2017. The Firm advised clients on numerous multibillion-dollar deals last year, including ChemChina’s $43 billion acquisition of Syngenta and Invitation Homes’ $20 billion merger with Starwood Waypoint Homes, among many others. Alan Klein, Co-Head of the Firm’s Mergers and Acquisitions Practice, told the publication: “We bring to bear for our strategic clients a tremendous breadth of practice areas on any M&A transaction, whether it’s tax, executive compensation or IP, which each see a significant amount of deal flow.” Mario Ponce, fellow Co-Head of the Firm’s Mergers and Acquisitions Practice, and Marni Lerner, Head of the Firm’s Private Equity Mergers and Acquisitions Practice, discussed Simpson Thacher’s decades-long relationships with a number of clients and its balance of strategic and private equity capabilities that set it apart from competitors. According to Marni, such a balance is “second nature to people here as opposed to other firms where the practice is divided, but I think it goes to our strength of being well-rounded lawyers.” According to Mario, the Firm’s strong reputation and experience help foster long-term client relationships. “They respect and appreciate our efficiency and ability to cut through issues and get deals done on a cost efficient basis for them,” he said.
