On January 19, 2017, President Obama commuted the sentence of a Simpson Thacher client, Robert Lee Williams, III, who in 2008 was convicted of conspiracy to distribute cocaine and sentenced to 20 years of incarceration. Mr. Williams will now be released on May 19, 2017, after which he plans to reconnect with his family. Mr. Williams’ commutation was one of the highlights of a year-long multi-office effort on behalf of Clemency Project 2014 led by Litigation Partner Jason Bussey. Mr. Williams’ case was also handled by Litigation Associate Carolyn Hill.
