Corporate Partner Rajib Chanda was quoted in BoardIQ, a Financial Times news service, in connection with recent measures to bolster diversity among boards of directors. The article, “Diversity Is in the Eye of the Beholder, Joint Agencies Say,” discusses regulatory agencies’ efforts to address the Dodd-Frank diversity standards provision, as well as responses to the broad definition of “diversity” for which these efforts allow. Rajib emphasizes the value of the term “inclusion” in a policy statement that established joint standards to assess regulated entities’ diversity policies and practices, which the SEC, the FDIC and other regulators approved in 2015. “It implies pretty strongly that you include people who have not been included in various aspects of corporate America. But I also think it starts from a basic proposition of talking about diversity of race and gender,” he says. Rajib suggests that permission to interpret diversity affords companies the opportunity to be more inclusive.
