Corporate Partner Rajib Chanda was quoted in Ignites, a Financial Times news service, on the growing threat of ransomware attacks, in which cyber criminals gain access to a network, freeze or encrypt important data and then demand a ransom payment to release it. Ransomware attacks have already targeted individuals, hospitals, police departments, municipalities and the financial sector, though attacks are not often publicized. In 2016, the number of ransomware attacks tripled, with more than 4,000 attacks daily, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. Attorneys and consultants emphasize that firms should have a response plan in case they become victims of such an attack. Rajib emphasizes the importance of preparation, saying “An incident response plan is key to identifying the data that has been taken, the continuing existence of the threat and whether the data is recoverable through a back-up system.”
