Simpson Thacher was recognized by Law360 as Private Equity Group of the Year for 2015. The publication highlighted the group’s work on several of the year’s largest deals and fundraisings, including Dell’s $67 billion buyout of EMC, a consortium led by BC Partners’ $8.7 billion acquisition of PetSmart Inc. and the fundraising of the $18 billion Blackstone Capital Partners VII.
M&A Partner Gary Horowitz identified the Firm’s financing expertise as an asset in deals like Dell’s acquisition of EMC, where the parties used “letter” financing to complete the acquisition.
In the profile, Law360 acknowledged Simpson’s historical strength in the practice, which stems “back to the earliest stages of developing the legal framework for” its private equity clients. Tom Bell, the head of Simpson’s private funds practice, attributed the Firm’s private equity capabilities to its “collegial and collaborative atmosphere” and its ability to “bring greater numbers of specialized people together” to execute a broad array of deals.
