Simpson Thacher’s Pro Bono Work on Precedent-Setting Sex Ed Lawsuit Highlighted in Law360

The Firm’s pro bono work for the plaintiffs fighting a California school district over its outdated and medically inaccurate sexual education program was highlighted in
Law360 this month. The Firm and the ACLU of Northern California’s work in
American Academy of Pediatrics, et al. v. Clovis Unified School District resulted in a complete overhaul of the Clovis Unified School District’s (the “District”) curriculum and a precedential court ruling aimed to protect students sex ed rights state-wide. The District’s previous curriculum failed to provide pregnancy and STD-prevention education, and instead promoted abstinence-only until heterosexual marriage, which created a medically inaccurate curriculum that also reinforced biases on sexual orientation and gender. As a result of the lawsuit, teachers in the district take part in two days of training on how to teach the approved new materials and to promote inclusivity.
