Corporate Partner A.J. Kess and Corporate Associate Yafit Cohn were quoted in Agenda, a Financial Times publication, in an article discussing the drop in average age of S&P 1500 company directors. The age decline is attributed to, among other factors, younger directors joining boards following years of low board turnover, mandatory retirement policies and board refreshment. A.J. explained that tension exists between refreshing a board with new ideas from the next generation’s people and having the benefit of experience. “Somehow boards, management teams and shareholders are going to have to reach a consensus on how to balance those two competing, valuable aspects of governance,” he commented. Yafit added, “Companies’ situations change constantly. It makes sense to refresh that look and see exactly what it is the board needs in terms of skills and qualifications every year.”
