The American Lawyer recently awarded Simpson Thacher four “Global M&A Deals of the Year.” The Firm also received the Global Corporate Grand Prize for its representation of Vodafone Group Plc in the US$130 billion sale of its 45% interest in Verizon Wireless to Verizon Communications Inc. The deal also won in the U.S. category. In the Europe/Finland category, Simpson Thacher was recognized for its representation of Microsoft Corporation in its acquisition of Nokia Corporation’s Devices & Services business, license of Nokia’s patents, and license and use of Nokia’s mapping services, for EUR5.44 billion. In the two China-related categories, the Firm was recognized for its representation of Smithfield Foods (NYSE: SFD) in connection with its merger with Shuanghui International Holdings Limited for US$7.1 billion (China outbound category), and its representation of Focus Media Holding Limited in its going-private transaction valued at US$3.7 billion (China private equity category).
