Simpson Thacher Exempt Organizations Group partner David A. Shevlin and retired partner Victoria B. Bjorklund will speak at the 31st annual "Representing and Managing Tax-Exempt Organizations" conference on April 24-25, 2014 in Arlington, Virginia. Mr. Shevlin will speak on the panel entitled "Creative and Practical Uses of LLCs," which will cover when and how to use LLCs, ensuring the intended liability protection and tax exemption for LLCs. Mr. Shevlin will also speak at the "Issues in Nonprofit Governance: The New World of Social Enterprise and Implications for the Nonprofit Sector" program on April 23, 2014. He will speak on the panel "Charitable Investment in Social Enterprises: Options and Issues," which will examine potential structures for charitable investment in social enterprise.
Ms. Bjorklund will speak on two panels and will be featured on the "Ask the Experts" panel, which will help answer a variety of questions from conference attendees. The first panel, "Disaster Relief Organizations," will cover topics including tax exemption and disaster relief, employer-sponsored disaster relief organizations and special issues for private foundations. The second panel, "Charitable Giving Update," will provide an update on DAFs and supporting organizations, and will discuss the use and misuse of "America Friends" and loss of the charitable contribution deduction.
