Simpson Thacher Wins Asylum for Senegalese Woman

05.29.12

Simpson Thacher won asylum at the New York Immigration Court for a 23-year-old Senegalese woman who fled her home country to escape the threat of female genital mutilation and forced marriage.  Our client came to the United States when she was 15 and subsequently graduated from high school and junior college.  After a day-long hearing, the Court held that our client was excused from the one-year filing deadline due to “extraordinary circumstances” and that she otherwise qualified as a refugee deserving of asylum.  The team included Jonathan Sabin, Eli Isak, Kate Renaud and partner Todd Crider.
