Simpson Thacher Wins Asylum for Client from Mali

04.26.12
Simpson Thacher won asylum from the Immigration Court for Ms. T and Mr. D, despite numerous challenges, including issues relating to the timeliness of the application, which was filed 8 years after the filing deadline.  After being subject to female genital mutilation (FGM) as a child and domestic and sexual abuse after objecting to an arranged marriage with a man 40 years her senior, Ms. T fled to Niger, and then the United States, with her second husband.  Ms. T feared that if she were sent back to Mali, she would be unable to protect her only daughter from FGM.  She also feared how she and other family members would be treated because of her HIV status.  After a trial, asylum was granted in full.  This matter was referred by the City Bar Justice Center.  The STB team included associates Jeannie Chung, Alyssa Watzman, and Vanessa Bressler and partners Alan Turner and Linda Martin.
