Pro Bono counsel Harlene Katzman and litigation associate Alyssa Watzman are the recipients of this year’s Award for Excellence in Pro Bono Advocacy. Hosted by the Sanctuary Associates Committee, these awards were established to honor attorneys who provide outstanding pro bono advocacy and representation for clients of Sanctuary for Families’ Center for Battered Women’s Legal Services.
Last year, the Firm launched a pro bono program with Sanctuary for Families providing representation of immigrant victims of domestic violence in their applications for a U-visa. With the support of Barry Ostrager, Head of the Litigation Department, the Firm has since taken seven matters. The Simpson Thacher teams working on the cases also include associates Jeemin Chung and Swati Lohia, and summer associates Jason Gumer, Allie Rubin, Jennifer Fleury, Lorenzo DiSilvio, Rodrigo Surcan dos Santos, Brittany McCants, Shannon McGovern, Siobhan Lam. SEO Intern Ashley Burrell and Pro Bono/Diversity Coordinator Oscar Orellana also provided invaluable assistance. The application has already been granted for the Firm’s first client.
The awards ceremony “Above & Beyond” will be held on November 15, 2010 in New York City.
