On July 17, 2009, Simpson Thacher hosted twenty-six eighth-grade students from Legal Outreach's inaugural Pathways to Achievement and Community Transformation (PACT) Summer Law Institute. PACT is an innovative new program which is aimed at increasing the number of young Black men in college bound programs, and ultimately in the legal profession. Legal Outreach is a non-profit organization that prepares urban youth from underserved communities to compete at high levels by using intensive legal and educational programs. The day's program included a panel of speakers describing what they do at the Firm, and opening and closing statements delivered by the students. Nineteen attorneys and staff members participated in the visit, which was organized by corporate associate Justus C. L. Morris and Diversity Coordinator Elise de la Selle. Simpson Thacher partner John W. Carr helped spearhead Legal Outreach's efforts to raise funds for this new program, to which several partners and associates contributed.
