On March 10, 2008, Simpson Thacher hosted John Adams, Founding Director of the Natural Resources Defense Council, Inc. (NRDC), and David Hawkins, Director of NRDC's Climate Center, who gave a presentation on Global Warming. The interactive session provided an overview of ways to curb global warming and focused on proposed cap and trade legislation. The Lieberman-Warner Climate Security Act is the first comprehensive global warming bill to make it through any committee in Congress. The bill, which would set a declining cap on U.S. emissions of greenhouse gases, was approved in December 2007 by the U.S. Environmental and Public Works Committee.
Simpson Thacher has provided pro bono services to NRDC for many years, beginning with its work helping NRDC's founders form the organization in 1970, and has continued to support NRDC since then on a variety of litigation, corporate and tax matters.
