11.06.07

On October 30th the Firm hosted a legislative breakfast marking Domestic Violence Awareness Month and highlighting two pieces of pending New York State legislation aimed at protecting victims of domestic violence: The Fair Access to Family Court Law (A. 6060), which would expand the categories of domestic violence victims eligible to seek civil orders of protection in Family Court beyond married couples, blood relatives or people with children in common; and The Safe Harbor for Exploited Children Act (A.5258, S. 3175), which would provide community services and amend the juvenile prostitution laws to stop the persecution of sexually exploited children. The event was co-sponsored by The Lawyers Committee Against Domestic Violence and moderated by Manhattan Borough President Scott M. Stringer. Speakers included Lt. Governor David A. Paterson; author and former Simpson Thacher associate, Karenna Gore Schiff; Executive Director of InMotion, Catherine Douglass; and Assembly members Helene E. Weinstein and William Scarborough.
