Simpson Thacher Associates Secure Grant Of Asylum

05.24.07
Simpson Thacher associates successfully secured a grant of asylum on behalf of a Tibetan pro bono client in immigration court last week. Asylum initially had been denied to the Firm's client in 2001 by the immigration judge, whose decision was affirmed by the Board of Immigration Appeals.  The client's case was remanded by the Second Circuit for rehearing, and after receiving new evidence and hearing new legal argument, the immigration judge granted asylum to the client. Associates who worked on the case include Janet Whittaker, Leah Threatte, Helena Almeida and former associate Tony Matera. Another former associate, Jennifer Kim, also provided invaluable assistance through her position as the director of The Association of the Bar of the City of New York's Refugee Assistance Program.
