Mark J. Stein Joins Simpson Thacher As Partner

Deepening the Firm’s Government Investigations and Business Crimes Practice                                                                      

Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP announced today that Mark J. Stein would be joining the Firm, effective March 1, 2005 as a partner in its Government Investigations and Business Crimes Practice, based in the New York office.  As one of the country’s leading white collar practitioners, Mr. Stein has earned his reputation representing companies and individuals involved in investigations conducted by the United States Department of Justice, U.S. Attorney’s Offices around the country, the New York State Attorney General’s Office, the United States Securities and Exchange Commission, and other federal, state and self-regulatory bodies.   As a member of the Criminal Justice Act panel, Mr. Stein has extensive trial experience as defense counsel in federal criminal cases and has achieved a high percentage of acquittals over the past few years.

 Mr. Stein’s addition to Simpson Thacher enhances an established practice that represents individuals and business entities in a wide-range of civil and criminal government investigations, including Federal and State grand jury proceedings, SEC Enforcement proceedings and Department of Justice and Federal Trade Commission Antitrust investigations, the New York State and other State Attorneys General Offices.     

With another law firm since 1995, Mr. Stein served as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Southern District of New York from 1989 to 1994.  During that time he served as Deputy Chief of the Criminal Division.  While at the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Mr. Stein conducted numerous white collar investigations and prosecutions, principally involving allegations of securities fraud, money laundering and bank fraud.  In 1994, Mr. Stein served in the Office of the Independent Counsel for the Whitewater investigation.  Previously, he served as clerk for the Hon. Thomas P. Griesa in the Southern District of New York.  

Mr. Stein received his J.D. in 1983 from the University of Michigan Law School.  He is admitted in New York and in the United States District Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York and the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.
