Simpson Thacher Announces Fifteen New Partners

November 19, 2019New York—Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP announced that it has elevated the following attorneys to Partner, effective January 1, 2020:

Sunny Cheong (New York) – Sunny is a member of the Firm’s Capital Markets Practice. She represents both issuers and underwriters on a wide range of securities transactions, including IPOs and other equity offerings, as well as high yield, investment grade and convertible debt offerings. She received her J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School and a B.S. from Yale University.  

Crystal L. Frierson (Washington, D.C.) – Crystal advises sponsors on the organization, structuring and operation of private investment funds across a range of asset classes. She also advises sponsors on separately managed accounts, co-investments and corporate transactions. She received her J.D. from the University of California Berkeley School of Law and an M.P.A. from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University. She received her B.A., magna cum laude, from Howard University.

Yi Gao (Hong Kong) – Yi  advises clients on capital markets transactions, including SEC-registered offerings, Rule 144A/Regulation S offerings and listings in New York and Hong Kong for China-based companies. He also advises companies on pre-IPO and post-IPO financings and investments, and general corporate and regulatory matters. He received his J.D., magna cum laude, from the University of Michigan Law School, and an LL.B. and LL.M. from the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing.

Adam Goldberg (Hong Kong) – Adam represents clients in government and internal investigations, securities and other complex commercial litigation and international arbitration. He also provides regulatory counseling on a wide range of issues, including anti-corruption, sanctions, export controls, anti-money laundering and data privacy. He received his J.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles and his A.B., magna cum laude, from Brown University.

Robert Guo (Palo Alto) – Robert is a member of the Firm’s Private Funds Practice. He counsels fund sponsors on the establishment and operation of private investment funds across multiple asset classes. He also advises fund sponsors on governance and regulatory compliance matters. In addition, he has represented numerous private equity and venture capital investors on financing and other transactions. Robert received his J.D. from the University of California Berkeley School of Law and an A.B. from Cornell University. 

Jonathan Hwang (Hong Kong) – Jonathan is a member of the Firm’s Real Estate Practice. He counsels leading private equity firms on acquisitions, dispositions, joint ventures and other real estate-related transactions in the Asia-Pacific region. He received his J.D. from Harvard Law School and his B.S. from Stanford University.

Eli Isak (New York) – Eli is a member of the Firm’s Banking and Credit Practice. He advises leading private equity sponsors and their portfolio companies on a broad range of finance transactions, including acquisition financings, bank and bridge loan financings, refinancings and recapitalizations. He also advises strategic clients on a wide variety of corporate finance transactions. Eli received his J.D. from University of Pennsylvania Law School, earned a Certificate in Business and Public Policy from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and received his B.A., magna cum laude, from Yeshiva University.

Julia Kohen (New York) – Julia represents financial sponsors in connection with financings for private equity, real estate, infrastructure, debt and other investment funds. She also advises clients on complicated fund-level financings designed to facilitate and support investment activities, as well as management lines and employee and co-investment loan programs. She received her J.D. from Duke University School of Law and an M.A. and a B.A., cum laude, from the University of Delaware.

Daniel Lloyd (London) – Dan is a member of the Firm’s Private Funds Practice. He advises various sponsors of private investment funds across numerous strategies and asset classes on matters related to fundraisings, co-investments, managed accounts, structured secondary transactions and ongoing advisory matters. Dan received his L.P.C. from The College of Law, London and his Bachelor of Laws from the London School of Economics and Political Science. 

Matthew B. Rogers (New York) – Matt concentrates his practice on merger and acquisition transactions. He regularly represents strategic clients and private equity firms on a broad range of mergers, acquisitions, minority investments, joint ventures and dispositions across a wide variety of industries. He received his J.D., magna cum laude, from New York University School of Law and his B.S., magna cum laude, from Cornell University College of Engineering.

Brandan Still (Houston) – Brandan is a member of the Firm’s Banking and Credit Practice, representing lenders and borrowers in a wide range of banking and credit transactions. He also advises hedge providers and counterparties on commodity hedging transactions. Brandan received his J.D. from Harvard Law School and his B.B.A., summa cum laude, from Lamar University. He received a Diploma of Common Law from University College Cork, Ireland.

Malcolm J. (Mick) Tuesley (Washington, D.C.) – Mick represents clients in connection with national security reviews before the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) and related issues, including mitigation of foreign ownership, control or influence (FOCI) and export control compliance. He clerked for the Hon. Robert L. Miller, Jr., United States District Court for the Northern District of Indiana. Mick received his J.D., cum laude, from Indiana University, Maurer School of Law and his B.S.B. from Indiana University, Kelley School of Business.

Peter P. Vassilev (New York) – Peter focuses his practice on the organization, structuring and operation of private investment funds. He represents sponsors and funds focused on a wide array of asset classes, including real estate, debt and credit, buyout, growth, technology, venture and hedge funds. He also advises sponsors on separately managed accounts, co-investments and on a range of corporate transactions and strategic initiatives. He received his J.D. from Yale Law School and his B.A. from Dartmouth College.

Benjamin Wells (New York) – Ben advises registered investment vehicles and investment advisers, including closed-end funds, interval funds, business development companies and REITs. He counsels clients on transactional and regulatory matters, including structuring and formation, securities offerings, regulatory relief applications and ongoing governance and compliance. He received his J.D., cum laude, from the University of Michigan Law School and his B.A., cum laude, from Trinity University.
