Commemorating Juneteenth

06.19.20

We join in solidarity to observe Juneteenth, the national day commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. We know there is much work to do and want to take this opportunity to reiterate our commitment to combating racism and to share with you the steps the Firm is taking to further promote social justice and racial equality.

Simpson Thacher does not and will not tolerate any racism at the Firm. We hear, see and stand with our Black and Brown colleagues, clients, friends and family. We are actively developing a Firm-wide framework of initiatives to combat racism and promote diversity and equity, both within the Firm and in our broader society. We understand that allyship is critical to promoting social and racial justice. Within the Firm, we are creating broader curricula of workshops and fostering discussions on race, inequities in the workplace and the importance of allyship. We are committed to utilizing our unique skillset as lawyers to help bring about meaningful change. The Firm has a long history of fighting for civil rights, such as litigation brought in Mississippi challenging racially-motivated policing tactics and a class action challenging the state’s lifetime voting ban for people with disqualifying criminal convictions. We are building upon these efforts and are identifying additional ways we can leverage our talents and resources to serve our communities by assisting with policy-making, organizing and other efforts.

We also recognize that financial resources matter in the fight for justice. In addition to Simpson Thacher’s ongoing contributions to organizations that promote social and racial justice, we will be contributing an additional $500,000 in the weeks ahead to organizations that align with our commitment to combating racism.

These are just the first steps in our long-term Firm-wide commitment. We will continue to develop new ways to accelerate change and promote equality and justice.
