Leading Real Estate Capital Markets Lawyer William Sutton to Join Simpson Thacher

01.17.20

Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP announced that William Sutton will join the Firm’s Real Estate and Capital Markets Practices as Counsel in London.

Will is a prominent capital markets and securitisation lawyer who specialises in advising private equity sponsors and investment banks on a wide range of securitisation transactions, in particular on commercial mortgage-backed and whole-business securitisations, as well as transactions involving infrastructure and regulated industries.

“We are very pleased to welcome Will to our team in London,” said Jason Glover, Managing Partner of Simpson Thacher’s London office. “The real estate sector and related capital markets are growing increasingly complex and Will’s unique blend of experience across these areas will be enormously beneficial for our clients.”

For the more than four decades since its establishment in 1978, Simpson Thacher’s London office has advised clients on a wide range of transactions and legal matters throughout Europe. With approximately 130 attorneys, the office offers a team of English and U.S.-trained lawyers advising clients on a broad array of corporate transactions and legal disputes.

The Firm’s London Real Estate Practice regularly advises on some of the largest and most complex matters throughout Europe. Recent work includes representing Blackstone Real Estate Partners in connection with nearly all of their financings in the region, across more than 20 jurisdictions and all real estate subsectors. The Firm recently advised Blackstone on their approximately $4.75 billion acquisition of Dream Global’s subsidiaries and assets, and the creation, financing and acquisition of assets for their European urban logistics platform, Mileway, which now has more than €8 billion of assets under management.

“The addition of Will represents the logical extension of our real estate expertise, enabling us to provide clients with real estate-related capital markets advice, particularly with regard to matters in the CMBS market,” said Tom Lloyd, who leads the Firm’s Real Estate Finance team in the London office. “He has an impressive breadth of experience across many securitisation subsectors and will bolster our ability to advise clients as they seek to capitalise on the growing securitisation market.”

Will was previously at Clifford Chance in London. He received his Postgraduate Diploma in Law from BPP Law School London in 2005 and his Diploma in Law from City University in London in 2004. Will received a B.A. from Oxford University in 2003.
