Corporate Partner Rajib Chanda was quoted in FundFire, a Financial Times news service, in an article titled “Industry Pushes SEC to Loosen Rules on Alts for Individuals.” The article discusses comment letters in response to the SEC’s recent concept release on expanding access to alternative investments. In the article, Rajib touches on ideas proposed by industry participants, including whether to update the accredited investor definition and whether to expand retail investor access to alternative funds through defined contribution plans.
He also discusses an idea addressed in various letters which would allow private equity fund of funds, today accessible only to accredited investors, to become SEC-registered products and therefore listed, tradable vehicles. “As opposed to just making it easier for individuals to invest in single, private opportunities, this would expand access by putting them into registered, commingled vehicles run by a fiduciary,” he says. “It would be interesting to see academics, the private equity industry, the mutual fund industry, and law firms … all of those boats rowing in the same direction.”
