Simpson Thacher Named a “Top Firm” and Recognized with Six 2010 “Deals of the Year” by Asian-MENA Counsel

The Firm was recently awarded six Asian-MENA Counsel magazine (f.k.a. Asian-Counsel) Deals of the Year for 2010 and was named one of the “Top Firms” by Asian-MENA Counsel based on the number of winning deals.  

The Firm received Capital Markets Deals of the Year awards for our representation of Dai-ichi Life Insurance in its US$11 billion IPO and the underwriters in Samsung Life Insurance’s US$4.4 billion IPO and listing on the Korea Exchange.  Dai-ichi’s IPO was the largest in Japan since October 1998, and the largest in the world since March 2008.  Please click here for more information on this transaction.  Samsung’s offering was the largest IPO in Korea to date, including dual-listed IPOs.  To read more about this transaction, please click here.  In addition, the Firm was recognized with a Capital Markets/M&A Deal of the Year award for advising on Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group’s US$11.1 billion equity offering and US$3.8 billion self-tender offers, the largest non-IPO equity offering in Japan in 2010. Recognizing the Firm’s M&A representations, the publication awarded the Firm Equity/M&A Deal of the Year for our role in Sanyo Electric Co.’s sale to Panasonic Corporation, “part of the largest M&A deal ever made between Japanese electrical goods manufacturers.”   In addition, the Firm received an M&A Deal of the Year award for our representation of UBS, BofA Merrill Lynch and Daiwa SMBC as financial advisors to Nippon Mining Holdings Inc. in the US$11.7 billion sale of Nippon Mining to Nippon Oil Corp.   

Simpson Thacher received a Project Finance Deal of the Year award for representing The Blackstone Group in connection with financing of the GNPower Mariveles Project, the largest Philippine Greenfield power project financing in over a decade.   

In its sixth annual Deals of the Year awards, Asian-MENA Counsel magazine recognized the biggest and best deals from December 2009 to November 2010.  The deals were selected on the basis of innovation, complexity, size and uniqueness, from more than 800 submissions received from firms across Asia Pacific and the Middle East.  Asian-MENA Counsel magazine has been renamed to include their growing audience of in-house lawyers and compliance professionals from Asia Pacific through the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.
