On Saturday, October 18th, Simpson Thacher employees joined 8,500 other volunteers to help revitalize more than 100 New York City public schools. The STB team was assigned to The Island School, located at 442 East Houston (PS 188 M). The Island School has 420 students in grade Pre-K to 6, 96% of whom are eligible to receive school lunch, 15% are in temporary housing, and 20% are new immigrants. Volunteers undertook a variety of projects to revitalize the 100 year old school, including painting the outside of the building, painting line games on the playground, planting bulbs in flower boxes, and painting murals inside the school. New York Cares (www.nycares.org) is New York City’s leading volunteer organization. They work with over 1,000 nonprofit organizations and public schools throughout the five boroughs and provided critical volunteer services that touched the lives of nearly 400,000 disadvantaged New Yorkers last year.
